Approaching a cult as they are about to summon a beat to destroy the world is never an easy thing. Its less of an easy thing when you just ride up on them without much warning they are there and your companion who was supposedly leading you to a cave or something did not warn you that "Oh hey Trezlan you just rode right into the middle of a group of cultists." Now you may ask yourself why I didn't notice the group of men (its always men, women have more important thigns to do than summon beasts from beyond). And to that I say SHUT UP! There I was surrounded by creepy dudes with beards in cloaks and I was mounted, my weapons sheathed and looking like I showed up late for a party. I did have the god weapon on my horse still (still in its case so I had no idea what it actually was). Which meant if Trix was hoping to get me killed, she screwed up in letting me keep the one thing we needed.
"Looks like I'm late sorry guys." I hopped off my horse they all gave me that wild eyed crazy person stare that wild eyed crazy people have. The group was on the ruins of what at one point had probably been a church. We were also near the ocean, which didn't surprise me because oceans have always held power, even for a god like The Fire God. Also if you were to banish an abomination of the Fire God, doing so in the ocean, not a bad idea. The cultists looked like they were almost finished, a greenish sort of goo had formed near the center of their little creepy circle and before I showed up the chanting had hit a bit of a crescendo (which makes it even worse I kind of missed the whole cultist thing).
I was about to follow up my clearly they are buying it statement with some "I brought beer the good kind." When a couple cultists exploded and the booming sound of a rifle shot followed. Clearly Trix had decided my act was not going that well. The cultists struggled to fight back against Trix (I mean she had the drop on them AND explosive bullets, how exactly can you fight that off?) I was feeling pretty good about arriving when I did when a snarled ugly man almost blasted me into next week.
I should have known someone there would have some magical ability (I mean someone has to work the ritual) I did not expect him to have a considerable amount. His bout of green flame was interesting (how or why green?) and terrifying because it seemed like his skill was equal to my own. I want to say I dodged the burst with grace, but I really just fell on my ass and pulled my pistol firing off a couple shots, one missed and the other he melted with some kind of fire shield. The pistol doing me no favor I tossed it aside and drew my sword, a nearby explosive bullet vaporizing a cultist about to stab me to death coated me in former cultist bits (Trix also couldn't hit magic man because of the weird fire shield). I unleashed my own red fire (have I mentioned my fire is red? I think so, but since this guy was using a different color I think I should mention specifically mine is red) and he counteracted it, while keeping that shield up. He had also drawn his own sword, though his was once of those weird snakey looking blades I hadn't seen in a while (with the advent of guns swords were more for show).
He wielded his in his right hand, I had mine in my left. For a moment I worried I'd be screwed since it had been a while since I'd had any kind of sword play, but the way he swung his sword told me it had been never since he'd ever had to use it (probably some ceremonial thing he think looked cool). I made sure to bury my sword in one of the gaps in his blade (which was the point of the snake design to catch an opponents sword) and with a bit of force knocked his sword from his hand and to the ground. Following that up like a man who had not gone out of practice with using a sword I swung upswards with a flick and sliced his throat wide open, he dropped to his knees before the weird glowing green pool.
"Looks like we stopped the abomination didn't even need the god thingy." Trix was near me now, having finished off the rest of the cultists from a distance.
"Are you sure about that?" I hadn't looked at it since dispatching the snarly looking magic man, but the pool of green had grown, the blood of the fallen nearby adding to it.
"Crap, this wasn't one of those they have to sacrifice themselves to break the seals type summon was it?"
"There are multiple types?" Trix voice was a bit hard to hear, the summoning pool was growing bigger and noise was echoing from within.
"Oh yeah tons of ways to summon something I'll have to show you sometime." By the end of my sentence I was shouting to be heard. The pool grew bigger and bigger and then exploded throwing both me and Trix off our feet. When I got back to my feet the noise was gone, but a creature that was half man/half molten fire was in its place. The abomination roared and Trix reloaded her rifle, me? Well I bravely stood my ground and fled in the other direction. Look this thing was supposed to wipe out life, I wasn't about to just wait around for it to do so!
