"What are they?" Lorissia half yells, half screams it out, we're surrounded by the former members of the fancy party.
"I could tell you but I'm a little busy right now." We had gone back to back to fight them off. I did know what they were, a little too late to help our current situation but I'm sure Lorissia would be happy to know I never again fell into a similar trap. So there was that. Lorissia had loosed a couple of arrows at the undead surrounding us, but it wasn't really doing enough to keep them back (arrows are not great against the undead, you tend to pierce something useless and they just keep coming). I was gathering my power, in the back of my mind I'd seen Valyra do something similar once (not fight off a trap of the undead, but unleash a new spell I hadn't tried before).
"Do something fast, I think they are catching on that I don't have much here." Saying it out loud wasn't the brightest idea, then again its not like the undead couldn't have figured it out anyway. There were thirty or so around us now. Their gathering numbers were kind of working against them as the more that gathered took up spots from the ones already there. And they sort of banged against each other in trying to eat us. I felt the power rising up inside, I rattled off the words from Valyra's memory and then grabbed Lorissia driving her to the ground.
I lobbed fire and power upwards, a ball of pure energy that exploded at shoulder height. It washed out around us and our enemies were decapitated. I felt drained as the fire dispitated at the edges of the room (which now looked like Lorissia had once described it, burned and partially destroyed). The initial group of undead were gone, but more were coming I could hear the thump of feet on wood. Lorissia drug me up by the shoulder and lead me down through some rotted wood into a cellar. Down a dark hallway we came to a room with a heavy metal door that she slammed and latched. The room was completely blackened, I willed a bit of light to illuminate it and Lorissia found a discarded working oil lamp. The room looked to be a former treasury as there were shelves and trunks long empty nearby. We could hear the thumps of our pursuers on the door outside.
"Well I think I have time for that explanation now." I had to smile, if I wasn't feeling like I needed a two day nap I would have laughed. So there we were swapping a trap for being trapped, and the oil in the lantern didn't seem like it had a lot in it. I could see despite Lorissia's smile she also didn't feel we were in a good place. And that's where I'll leave you for now, trapped in a room with the light running out. Sleep well!
